My Adoption ❤️

So, I'm not going to lie, being adopted has been a very touchy subject for me and I'm here to now tell my personal story.

I'm sure a lot of people look at me and assume that I was raised into a strict asian family who had traveled over from Asia to give me better opportunities and it's really the complete opposite of that.

Giving up a child isn't easy but if you know you can't care and provide for a child and give that child somewhere to live a full life, that's one of the greatest things a person can do.

An Adoption Story:
On September 11, 1994 a baby girl was born who desperately needed a family that would love her, care for her, provide for her and who needed a family that would shape this baby into a person with great character. The Birth Mother wanted the absolute best for this precious life and didn't settle for less. When this baby was born, the birth mother obviously knew she couldn't keep this child and put her up for adoption and was contacted by an agency with a couple who wanted a child so badly. There were other families and couples looking into adopting this baby girl and after the birth mother was finished talking to all the candidates, the couple who wanted a family more than anything and would do anything to provide for the child stood out among the rest to the birth mother and they were given this precious child. This couple went to great lengths to have this baby's adoption finalized and legal and it involved selling a condo to pay for the adoption fees, even though this couple already had a house, it showed how much they were willing to do anything for this child.

When the baby was brought home, her new family literally smothered her with unconditional love and care, something she wouldn't of had if her birth mother would of kept her. She was given opportunities where her interests peaked, a great education, a quiet peaceful environment and room to just be a kid. This child and her Mommy's souls were meant to be together and showed the whole world that even though you might not be blood related, a Mother and Child's bond is more important than having the same blood. You're probably wondering about the Daddy, right? Well, her dad might be a little rough around the edges but don't let it fool you, this baby brought so much joy, love and sensitivity to him and finally had a buddy where he could teach everything too.

This girl lived a good, normal and enriched childhood. The key to her normality was that her parents told her when she was able to comprehend that she was adopted but that she is loved unconditionally by her parents and that would never change. This little girl didn't care one single bit that she was different looking from her parents and she 100% understood that it's okay to have a different and unique story among the sheep. This child was such an outdoors kind of kid, loved going out and getting dirty, hyper, a gymnast, musically inclined, bright and full of happiness, everything her Birth Mother wanted for this child that she had called "Tahn Mae Do."

To this day, this adopted child loves her life and family and has become a young women who is now well on her way of being 20 years old!

Here are a few pictures of MY precious, loving and happy family!
Straight cheesin' after my first official photo shoot with my family right there with me and supporting me! <3

The Struggle That I Face:
My biggest struggle that I face in my life that's related to the adoption is that my Birth Mother does not want to meet me or come in contact with me whatsoever. It breaks my heart a little knowing that she doesn't want to see the baby she brought to this world whom she called "Tahn Mae Do," all grown up. The reason behind her not wanting to see me is because she was embarrassed about having a child at 17 out of wedlock and isn't accustomed to the Vietnamese culture. I understand it all, I'm just curious to see if my personality is similar to hers, if I look like her and all those normal questions when you don't know who your biological mother is.

I'm gonna wrap it up here and leave you all hoping that I helped someone who has a similar story as mine!
XOXO

A Message To My Birth Mom, Margie Do:
Thank you for giving me a chance at life and not choosing the easy way out of things by aborting me. I have a beautiful life and I'm forever grateful for the gift of life and even more thankful for the couple you gave me too. Thank you for calling me Tahn Mae, I just so happen to absolutely love flowers! If you ever see this here is the most recent picture of me from a photo shoot I had.

Let's Talk Tuesday: Life After Gymnastics

My first day of gymnastics back in 1999!

DISCLAIMER: This is in no way shape or form seeking sympathy. I literally hate when people feel sorry for me, this is intended to tell my story and hopefully be able to show people that they're not alone, be relatable and give some advice to help! This blog is to help others, not seek attention :)

Back Story: (No pun intended) As an elite gymnast, you put a ton of stress on your body and don't stop when you're exhausted, that's the reality of the sport. I started gymnastics when I was a little over the age of four and that's what I breathed. I didn't care about school, music, making friends or anything. I cared about being the best gymnast in the state of Colorado and saw my future as a professional gymnast and going to the Olympics. I didn't fully "retire" from gymnastics until I was almost sixteen because I really thought I could make it on the national team without being too old without hitting puberty and getting my chance, then suddenly everything changed after a knee injury. For approximately the first six years of gymnastics, I was on a team with an instructor who didn't have the proper equipment like a higher end gym had. We practiced with about a half of an inch thick mats that were very stiff that we're places over the concrete floor, no rebound floor, no built in trampolines, and no foam pit. Basically, we had limited equipment that was next to nothing. We had some thicker mats that were placed after the vault and one to land on for round off back handsprings, just in case of the chance that we did happen to eat shit, it wouldn't hurt as bad. But, none the less, no matter what, if you fell your body would hit extremely hard and all of your weight would be absorbed into about a two inch thick, somewhat squishy mat and trust me, it wasn't the most pleasant thing to feel. I guess for me, not having the luxury of a state of the art gym equipment it built up my pain tolerance. Then, when I got a call from the best gym in the state that called my mom asking if I'd like to train at their gym because they saw potential in me, as soon as I saw their gym, falling didn't scare me one bit. But, through those seven years at a next to nothing "gym" practicing three times a week for four hours, it was slowly tearing apart my body. If I knew what I was going to experience what I have been now, I would of transferred to a state of the art gym as soon as I reached level 2.

Life After Gymnastics: Though, I was still a very active person after retiring from the sport, my body finally hit puberty when I was at the age of 16 and that's when my entire life changed. I began to have knee problems from not having the right equipment for six years and having my knee dislocated that was the reason I ended my career with gymnastics. My cardiledge in my knees over the years has worn away and is painful but became so minor after I began to get the headache that turned my world upside down.

Headaches and Temporary Neck Parslysis: It was in the middle of my Junior year of High School when my life completely changed. I came home from school one day, as usual and began to get a headache. I didn't think anything of it until it gradually got worse and worse until I took some Tylenol and went to sleep. I woke up very early in the morning with an excruciating headache, couldn't move my neck, freaking the Hell out and at this point I was crying uncontroably and the pain literally wouldn't ease up, until my mom decided to give me a pain pill so I could get some sleep and relief. When I woke up again that next day, my head was still hurting, I couldn't turn on the lights, felt weak, didn't want to move or eat and laid in bed and slept. A day later, I finally told my parents to take me to the doctor immediately, I was put on migraine medication, birth control and heavy pain medication. The migraine medication failed and had an allergic reaction to almost all of them and the doctors the. thought I was having migraines due to my hormones, but that was ruled out from blood work. During that time, we had a tumor scare where my parathyroid glands were from the results of my blood tests for calcium and my parathyroid levels and then when I retested, it came back normal. Thankfully, I didn't need to get them removed!

MRI and CT Scan Results/Neurologist: After about two and a half weeks of extremely painful headaches, I finally got an appointment from one of the best neurologists in the country, Dr. Viceck Baluja. I say he's the best because he listened, was compassionate, didn't talk to me like I was crazy, knew I was in a lot of pain and did everything he could to get my life back together and came to visit me when I was rushed into the hospital after he got off of his shift at a doctors office 20 minutes away to examine me, tell the other neurologists my history and to talk to me to keep me company for a bit. My first visit with Dr. Baluja, he examined my body from head to toe and ordered MRIs and CT Scans for my brain, cervical spine and lumbar spine and when the test results came back, it finally proved that I wasn't faking anything and that there was really something wrong. My MRI scan of my cervical spine (the neck), showed that my neck had grew wrong and is pretty uncommon. Instead of my neck having a slight "C" curve to it, it grew straight up and down like an "I" which made my Altas C1 rub up against my skull that causes friction and pinching off the nerve which makes me experience intense headaches and migraines. He also discovered through my lumbar spine MRI that my L3 disc was shriveled up and have an answer to the discomfort that I had right there. Another discovery that he found was that my legs were uneven, my hips grew unparalleled to each other and that I had a mild case of scoliosis. Then, that's when a ton of treatments and medication began.

Treatments and Results: Let's just say, I've had a ton of treatments, some of them are way worse than others but I'm going to go through them chronologically!

1.) My first treatment I was given was going to physical therapy, to help regain the functions in my neck and muscle. It was probably the worst experience I've had for a treatment, simply because they used a method called "Deep Dry Needling" without me knowing what they were actually going to do. Deep Dry Needling is a form of acupuncture, but one of the most painful things you can do. The procedure is very basic, they take thicker needles that can be 5-7 centimeters long and are inserted in your trigger points that are found when your muscle spasms from the touch. Once the needles are in the specialist begins to tap on top of the needle and that's when the pain gets intense. I've never experienced so much pain from needles, it brought me to tears as much as I wanted to be tough and strong, but I couldn't. After about the fifth needle, I called it off because I couldn't stand the pain and walked out. Needless to say, I was traumatized and never came back again. There was no difference and didn't help one bit, if anything it made it worse!

2.) The second treatment I had were Cortisone Injections. This wasn't something I said, "oh go ahead, let's do it!" kind of deal. In fact, it was the exact opposite. When the option was given to me, I immediately said, thanks but no thanks since I was traumatized from the Deep Dry Needling. I had to think long and hard with my family to see if I really needed it or completely cross it off the list. About two weeks later, I decided that it could maybe possibly get me back to normal and that I could go on about my life. Cortisone Injections are safe in my opinion and did make a slight difference. For this procedure, I was totally put to sleep and out cold so I didn't have to feel a thing because I am very small and the needles were very large from what I was told. Dr. Baluja did this procedure and did six injections throughout my neck. When I woke up, my neck was totally stiff, was in pain and felt like my head wasn't attached too my body. But, there were some results from the injections and the Cortisone did take down the inflammation in my neck after about a week. I was still having severe headaches but my neck didn't seem as bad as it was!

3.) After I was completely healed from the Corrisone shots, I was sent too an amazing Chripractor and Massage Therapist, so I could have some temporary relief which was great! Having a Chiropractor who is incredibly nice, one of the best in the state and has your best interest instead of your money, is very hard to find these days. My Chiropractor, Dr. Anderson is someone I fully recommend if you're in Colorado needing a chiropractor, you'll love her! We have a family friend, who has gone to school for Massage Therapy and about 5 minutes away from my house, so it wasn't a pain in the butt to get a massage once a week and let me tell you, massages are the best! With combination of going to the chiropractor and getting a massage my body felt way more relaxed and that's what I needed.

4.) After about a year of seeing Dr. Baluja, he decided to leave the clinic and moved for a bigger opportunity and more education which definitely left me kind of just hanging there not knowing what to do. A couple months later, I was referred to a new neurologist who is also a very reputable Neurologist throughout the country and that's when we decided to start doing Botox Treatments. Botox you ask? Haha, yes Botox. Botox isn't only for enhancing your facial features and preventing wrinkles, in fact it's used to blocks chemical changes on nerve endings! The Botox is injected into my neck, shoulders, temples and between my eyebrows! I really recommend Botox if you have chronic migraines, it definitely helped my pain, took down the inflammation and helped me get my life under control!

5.) Now, here's when my life really changed. I was sent to a pain specialist and I was put on a treatment that would be incredibly invasive, painful and emotionally draining but would really help my life and change it for the better. This treatment was Lidocaine Injections and reshaping my entire shoulder and neck structure by breaking apart the scar tissue and shaping the muscles by a certain massage techniques and instruments. Every Thursday for a little over two months, I would go in, get ten lidocaine injections injected into me throughout certain parts of my body where they were going to work on for that day and then go into another room where a doctor would start breaking away all of the scar tissue. Currently, I am the youngest patient they've seen at this facility and one of the worst cases they've seen with the amount of scar tissue from gymnastics that was formed. The lidocaine injections were literally nothing compared to the reshaping of my upper body and after each session the entire section worked on would be completely bruised and stiff. After the treatments on the next day, I'd have to go back into the office, follow up and then get an electric pulse and ultrasound massage to help with the bruising and pain. This treatment has really changed my life, I can now work, go out and not feel as much pain as I once did.

School: Now, you're probably wondering what was going on with school right? I was missing a ton of school during the last two years of Hogh School and was really struggling with keeping my grades up and being on track with everything. I'm not gonna lie, I was a good student, I did my work, got good grades, had perfect attendance during my Sophomore and my beginning of Junior year and was pretty smart like my peers. 98% of my class were college bound, took Honors and AP classes and in general pretty bright and intelligent people as much as I dislike a lot of them, they're pretty smart. When I started this journey, I definitely fell behind and was put on a 504 Plan that allowed me to work at my own pace and gave me some leeway if I needed more time to complete an assignment and the teachers had to accept my assignments if they were late. During this time, people were talking about me, saying I was faking it and really hurt me. One thing that I will never forget was when I was told by some of my Public Speaking classmates that the teacher was talking complete shit about me IN FRONT OF THE ENTIRE CLASS when I was gone and in the hospital for my Cortisone Injection procedure. She literally had the nerve to get up in front of the class and say something along the lines of "Well Katie isn't here of course and she's just faking it because she doesn't want to be at school." That, literally crossed the line and both my Mom and Dad got involved, spoke to the counselor and principal and made a deal where if something else was said by this woman, her job would be ended right then and there. Nobody should have people talking behind their backs when they're legitamently sick and going through a lot at a young age. If any one of you are struggling with health problems and teachers are talking badly about you, get your parents involved and get them fired. No one needs to put up with that crap!

Currently: Right now, my life is somewhat back to the way it used to be after the lidocaine treatments. I am definitely a happier person and I'm not as depressed. I do still get severe headaches and neck pain but it's something that I think I'm always going to have to deal with. Back in December, I got into a very bad car accident, completely totaled my car and smacked my head against the window and am now experiencing more neck pain with a possible herniated disc from the way it bulges out in my neck, but it can all be fixed!

Advice For Everyone Who Struggles With Pain Physically and Emotionally: If any of you are struggling with severe pain, you need to see a doctor. I know specialists and treatments can be very very expensive, but you need to invest in your health if you want to better your life. You need to make sure, you're feeding your body properly, getting some exercise, following up with your doctors and getting checked from head to toe regularly to prevent things that could be fatal. One trick that was taught to me by Dr. Baluja is called Biofeedback where you begin to relax, deeply breathing and focusing on a specific image, (I personally imagine like a blue sun) and going into a meditation where I let go of the negative emotions. This trick definitely helps and I recommend it everyone whether you're in pain, stressed out or none of the above. It helps you find inner peace and helps you forget about your worries and pain. Thinking positively is something you need to do, at the end of the day focus on one or two things that made a positive impact on you, instead of wallowing in all of the things you're upset about. For the first couple of years of the headaches, I was so depressed, lost a few friends, was going through a break up and felt like nothing was going right. I decided to pick myself up, brush off and surround myself with people who love me and supported me, so I recommend doing the same! It's okay to be a little sad at times, but don't let it take over your life. I believe that if you're depressed, you have the decision to either make it worse or turn it around and become happy! Nothing happens over night, it's all going to take time to heal.

Advice For Gymnasts:
Make sure to go to a GOOD gym with rebound floors, trampolines, proper mats and equipment! Don't settle for anything less unless you want to go through a ton of painful problems when you get older! If someone says you can't do something, prove them wrong! :)

"Story of my Sole"
Vans has always been a huge part of my life, ever since I was a toddler. I remember my mom buying my light blue denim authentic Vans to wear with all of my play clothes. I distinctly remember having the denim authentics, white authentics and navy blue authentics because back then, Vans didn't have the awesome glittery ones like they do today (so jealous.) Even throughout Preschool, Kindergarten and the early years of Elementary School, I had Vans! See, my Dad used to skate board back in the 80's and saved his old board for me to ride when I got old enough which was about 6 years old. I looked really cool out where our cement walkway is up to our stairs and riding back and forth for hours! Unfortunately, I never did any more skateboarding because well I'm really clumsy, but later music became a huge part of my life and I started going to the Vans Warped Tour the summer going into 8th Grade and haven't missed a year since and is what I always look forward too during the summer! Vans, have always been a staple in my wardrobe and I've really had the Vans lifestyle all my life. I'm different, eclectic, strange and most of all, an individual which is what Vans is known for as a brand and lifestyle. I believe the only year I didn't wear Vans was in the Third Grade because, Etnies were all the rage back then, but when I got into Fourth Grade, I told my Mom that I wanted Vans and that's what I got! I remember they were Pink and White Old Skools with satin pink laces and they were so COOL! Ever since then, Vans have always been in my wardrobe every single year. I have some Authentics that are limited edition and some that aren't, a few pairs of limited edition Classic Slip Ons, a ton (I mean a ton) of Authentic Lo Pros, lots of Hadleys, a pair of Sk8Hi Wedges that are always shown in my pictures, a couple pairs of Mohikans from the Surf Collection, and my newest edition, the Sk8Hi Slims in (Leather) Black/True White. I can definitely say that I have a problem with shoes.

My Life Changing Experience!
When I was fresh out of High School in 2012, I had been looking for a job literally EVERYWHERE in Colorado Springs and one magical day, I was in buying shoes at Vans (of course) and the Assistant Manager told me that I should apply because they were hiring. As soon as I got home I submitted my resumé and was hoping so bad that I would have the opportunity to interview as a sales associate. I was that annoying kid that would call and follow up to see if Vans was hiring at the time and finally one day in July, I got a call asking if I would be interested in interviewing with a few other people and I quickly, with no thought or anything said "Oh my gosh! Yes!" A few days later I came in to interview with about 12 other people and the whole time I was thinking to myself "Uhh yeah, all these kids have way cooler stories than me, I'm just some average girl who likes fashion, is in to music, always attends Warped Tour, I can't skate, I don't have any work experience and I haven't overcome being paralyzed, so I'm definitely not getting hired here." When I got home from my interview that day, I was really discouraged and was being pretty hard on myself as I always am. Two days later, I got a call saying I was hired and that's when my life completely changed. When I first started working for Vans, I was literally the most quiet, shy, insecure and awkward girl ever. I was painfully shy throughout my life since I was a gymnast and didn't have a social life at all. It was so hard for me to go up and talk to customers without being incredibly awkward. But after about a month, something really changed inside of me. I became more confident in myself, I liked what I saw in the mirror, I learned that people want to actually talk to me for who I am as an individual which made it so much easier to go up and talk to people about their day and everything in between.

A Vans Romance Story?
What's a life changing story without a little bit of romance right? Let me take you back to the first time I ever had a shift at Vans, there was this guy working with me, was super nice, talked to me and really helped me out. After that, I didn't see him for a few weeks and then I worked with him again for a couple hours and he was still as cute and nice as I remembered! So, he asked if I wanted one of his shifts and of course I said yes because I loved working there. But then, something inside of me told me I should text him and as creepy as I am, I got his number from the employee phone book and texted with "Hey thanks for giving me your shift!" Super weird, you don't have to tell me twice, but he asked if I wanted to hangout that next day and being the girl that I am, I said yes! Later I found out he thought I was pretty and ever since then and after a first kiss, I've always gotten "butterflies." I know, I know, I'm lame. We hangout whenever our schedules are clear and every time I'm with him, the more I grow feelings towards this person and I can't tell you why. While I was living in Denver working at another Vans store, there honestly wasn't a day where I didn't think of him and wanted to be with him, but this is when I completely screwed up, got arrogant, cocky, big headed, turned into the biggest bitch and thought I was hott shit because I was kind of with someone else. It is the past but literally if I could go back in time I wouldn't of been so selfish and stayed where I was in life. So, things went sour in Denver and he was literally the only person I wanted to be with. Of course there was a time period where he wasn't a fan of me, at all to say the least  and I don't blame him. But, when I moved back where I am now, we started to talk and hangout again and I realized that when I'm with him, that's where home is and there's no place else I'd rather be. He is special person and really the only person I have truly cared about and it's crazy to think that we met at Vans, happen to both work there at the same store, love the brand and live the lifestyle. I feel like it's kind of like a romance movie without the makeout scenes in the rain! Haha 😉

My Realizations:
I really was shown the type of person I am and what my personality is really like from the almost two years I've been with Vans. I've become to understand myself as a person, have come out of my shell and blossomed into the person I want to be. If it wasn't for Vans I'd probably still be that quiet shy girl with no personality and for that, I'm forever grateful for having the opportunity I have with this company. If it wasn't for my family at Vans supporting me, cheering me on and being there when I'm at rock bottom I don't know where I'd be. From fashion, to music, to getting to know myself as an individual, to experiencing feelings I've never had, Vans is where my heart is and is my passion. ❤️

I have had a ton of questions as to why I always rep Vans and I hope this all answers your guys' questions from head to toe!

XOXO

My Hobbies!

Since it's the night time and I'm devoted to making a blog post every night before I go to bed to just rewind and talk to all of you, I just wanted to talk about my hobbies since all there is outside is snow see!
It's so terrible! But the thing that I absolutely love about living in Colorado is that I LOVE snowboarding! I started snowboarding when I was probably eight years old and is a hobby that helps me escape reality and gives me a sense of freedom.

I also really love makeup, trying new products and playing with it! It's art to me and makes me so relaxed and calm. I love to get dolled up before lets say a "date" and watching a guys face be really impressed by me getting cleaned up so well because I am a pretty big tomboy too!
I'm really kind of a germaphobe and hate getting dirty. But, when it comes to working on cars and street racing, that's my adrenaline rush. It's what clears my mind completely and what keeps me sane. There's no better feeling revving up an engine and flying through gears and no, I do not mean just hitting the gas pedal. I mean driving a manual! I feel like I'm kind of just known as this "beauty guru" if you will and only into fashion but seriously I love getting down to the nitty, gritty and messy part of working on cars. This my full control, power, freedom, confidence, fun and total "mind clearer!" I love the empowerment I get with having a car with a twin turbo and something I can throw around corners and go full throttle up a mountain!  Subaru STIs have my heart!! Tell me what you all love to do! :) good night you guys! I hope you like getting to know me!!

Cozy days and Cuddles with Cookie :)

Meet my Poodle Cookie!!

I believe you should all get to know me on a very personal level, I think y'all should know that I'm just a normal person just sharing my interests with the world. I want you guys to also see just the normal, weird, goofy, always taking selfies Katie because let's get real, that's just who I am! Every night, I plan on writing a post that breaks down my day, what I'm working on, what's on my mind and all of those kind of things, with a very not so formal way of typing and talking to all of you the way I'd talk in "real life." haha or even the way I would text some one! :P <---- (That's my favorite face to use!) But honestly, I woke up this morning, took this picture, started up my blog and really thought about what I wanted in life. I seriously thought I wouldn't have an audience at all and this would kind of be like my Facebook and within an hour I was over like 200 views. I am so so so thankful for all of you who take the time and read what I have to say and view my blog! It means so much to me and I really hope this whole thing turns out the way I hope it does! I know it's not going to be easy in any way but it's totally worth it. I'm going to pursue my dreams and so should everyone else :) Goodnight everyone! Talk to all y'all tomorrow!
XOXO

All About Me.

Well, let's start off with a formal introduction, shall we? My name full name is Kaitlin Marie McBride, but you can call me Katie. I was born on September 11, 1994, which makes me nineteen. I was born in Denver, Colorado and adopted into a family September 20, 1994 in Colorado Springs, Colorado and shortly after moved up into the mountains 15 minutes outside of Woodland Park, Colorado. I can say I've had a pretty "normal" life I guess. Growing up, my interests were gymnastics, gymnastics and gymnastics and was my world for about eleven years. It ended quickly from a knee injury and I didn't know what to do with myself. When I was around five years old, I learned how to read music, but never really thought of it until gymnastics ended and I discovered that it was something I could excel in besides academics. From 6th grade all the way through high school, I made it known that music was something that was a big part of me performing in symphonic band, wind ensemble, jazz band 1&2, a Christian band called Higher Ground and my favorite...marching band. Through the years I've learned to play piano, clarinet, tenor saxophone, guitar and bass guitar which is something I've become to appreciate. During school, I was never the "popular" or "cool" kid, quite frankly I was incredibly awkward and didn't fit in whatsoever. I found my passions for what I wanted to do in life after graduating high school and being hired from one of the most iconic brands, Vans. I've felt behind in life compared to my peers and that my interests weren't "right" and wasn't anything I could make a career out of until I discovered Bubzbeauty on YouTube. I wasn't interested in being in college and working a 9am-5pm for the rest of my life and still am not interested. What I love is working for Vans, fashion, beauty, make-up, music, modeling and showing the world I'm not like everyone else and still be "successful" in life without the things society makes out to be "the things you have to do in order to be successful."
